Muzeum is an independent non-profit institute for art production, mediation and publishing established in 1995 in Ljubljana, Slovenia
Since 1999 Muzeum's flexible strategy has resulted in the production of strings of projects which focus on invention, creative challenge and mobility of mind.
First established in November 1993 as the MUZEUM theatre with its first production Cricket in the Fist, the non-governmental organisation Muzeum Institute was formally founded in 1996. Muzeum Institute is a research centre for new initiatives from various fields of contemporary arts (theatre, dance, visual arts, design, architecture, literature, music) that result in performing arts – theatre. Muzeum Institute has coordinated several initiatives and collaborated in international networking projects in various artistic disciplines. Through these intensive activities, the organisation has gained valuable international experience as well as firmly established its network of numerous national and international cultural institutions.
MUZEUM Collection on ECLAP

The MUZEUM collection for ECLAP focuses on Slovenian theatre and dance production in the period 1945 to 2010, although a few content items address the important highlights in the Slovenian theatre history context (such as playwrights Anton Tomaž Linhart, Ivan Cankar; abstracts from books about Adolphe Appia; posters of Slovene actors and actresses who performed abroad in the early 20th century). The collection presents some works from the Slovenian repertory (generally national) theatre, ballet and opera scene but the main focus is upon the Slovenian independent scene that has strongly developed since the mid-1980s and especially in the 1990s and 2000s. The collection presents the Slovenian manifestations of international movements and phenomena such as avant-garde, retro-garde, postdramatic theatre, street-theatre, experimental theatre, and the Europeanisation of Slovene theatre. Special attention is paid to the works that have won important awards at home, have made an impact on the international scene and/or have influenced important theoretical reflection and research.

More about Muzeum Institute
During 15 years of its creative activity Muzeum Institute has developed a steady collaboration with all the main Slovene theatre houses (national and independent), as well as the National and University Library, the Academy of Radio, Film and Theatre (AGRFT), the Faculty of Arts, the Museum of Modern Art Ljubljana, the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana, and the National Theatre Museum of Slovenia. In line with contemporary artistic practice, which links various fields of creation, Muzeum Institute has also collaborated with new media arts organisations: Kiberpipa, Ljudmila – Ljubljana Digital Laboratory, Multimedia Centre KIBLA, and Kapelica Gallery. Strong networking enables the linking and consequent upgrading of various resources and creative forces. This process will also be the main vehicle for the ECLAP project.
The list of authors from the beginning of Muzeum’s early activities until the present is comprised of numerous creative minds, often ones who work in other artistic disciplines and create work for Muzeum Institute in the space where their field intersects in unconventional ways with contemporary theatre practices.

The conceptual theatre project MUZEUM 1993–2000 probed individual fields of art (fine arts, time/architecture, drama text, music, gesture) in 6 stage performances directed by Barbara Novakovič Kolenc presented in various Ljubljana theatre institutions (Slovene National Theatre (SNG) Drama, Slovene Mladinsko Theatre, Cankarjev dom, Slovene National Opera and Ballet). The performances were presented at festivals in Albania, Armenia, Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Macedonia, Mongolia, Serbia, Slovakia, and the United Kingdom.
In addition to works by Novakovič Kolenc, Muzeum Institute includes in its programme the first performing arts project conceived by visual or media artists, architects, and theoreticians. From 2000 to 2009 Muzeum Institute produced one student performance annually and the conceptual PROJECT 1–5 researching theatre language by new authors coming from different fields: architecture, dance, theory, light design, art history.
In 2006 the performance Molière premiered at the Mladinsko Theatre in Ljubljana in co-production with Ex-Ponto Festival (produced by B-51 Cultural Society) and the performance Rodin II premiered at the Old Power Station Ljubljana (Stara Elektrarna SMEEL) in October 2006 in co-operation with Center Sonček. The Winter's Tale premiered in collaboration with Festival Ljubljana in December 2007 as a first part of a trilogy conceived by Barbara Novakovič Kolenc.
Since 2000, Muzeum’s work has also been extended into international cooperation projects in theatre and visual arts. Muzeum’s international project “serendipity” produced in 2000 invited guest-artist Peter Greenaway to the city of Ljubljana, offering him a possibility to create a site-specific project. The project also presented his artistic (film) production and published an accompanying theoretical book.
The next international cooperation was the project “Gesture in the Cultural Heritage of Europe Ljubljana”, funded by the Culture 2000 Programme of the European Union, coordinated by Fondazione Fabbrica Europa in Florence with co-organisers and partners from Cardiff, Procida, Barcelona, Athens, and Graz. For the project Muzeum Institute prepared a colloquium and live exhibition, “Gesture for the City”, in June 2005.
The Continental Breakfast – Memory (W)hole exhibition, at Ljubljana Castle was produced by Muzeum in September 2005. The Continental Breakfast project was conceived at the CEI Venice forum June 2003, organised by Trieste Contemporanea Committee. The aim of the project was to promote the new contemporary visual arts initiatives in Central Eastern Europe. It consisted of an international curatorial conference, a conference of performances, and an exhibition which afterwards toured in a site-specific variation to the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Skopje and the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Banja Luka.
From 1999–2001 the Muzeum Institute operated a Mobile Theatre Network, building a structure and new model for the touring of non-institutional performing arts projects within Slovenia and abroad escaping the place and time frameworks of capital cities and festivals.
The international exhibition Paperwork was presented at Vžigalica Gallery (of the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana) Ljubljana in January 2008 with artists from Slovenia, Macedonia, and Serbia.
From 2009 to 2011 Muzeum participated in the project “Focus on Art and Science in the Performing Arts: European contemporary production”, funded by the Culture Programme of the European Union. Thanks to the creation of a Euro-Mediterranean network, through this initiative young creators such as choreographers, directors, musicians and visual artists had the opportunity to enrich their production experience and to develop shared working and research practices that unite scientific and technological practice with artistic practice.
