Introduction    

Performing arts constitute one of the great pillars of European culture. Their development has facilitated the birth of national literary traditions and spurned the evolution of languages and traditions in all member states. There is a rich (audiovisual) patrimony of film collections, video and audio tapes, images, sketches, notes in the field of performing arts. Many of these lie within separate collections and archives scattered about Europe, forming an invaluable, but hitherto largely untapped, repository of knowledge.

ECLAP is a best practice network co-funded through the ICT Policy Support Programme of the European Commission.  ECLAP’s goal is to enable access to these resources, made available in digital form in an integrated online environment, providing guidelines and using metadata standards for searching and browsing. In its creation of a seamless and centralized online database, ECLAP is providing access to the performing arts collections and archives of the ECLAP partners, which includes leading institutions in this area. These resources will be progressively accessible through a common, multilingual, easy-to-use ECLAP e-Library for the Performing Arts.

The ECLAP e-Library will become part of Europeana, the multi-lingual online collection of millions of digitized items from European museums, libraries, archives and multi-media collections.
 

Performing Arts Digital Collections for the New Millennium, is the first in the series of  international events planned by ECLAP.
 

This first event will take place in Brussels on the 9th and 10th of June, 2011, with the support of La Bellone Maison du Spectacle.
 

In an exciting program, leading experts and practitioners will provide an overview of their state-of-the-art Perfoming Arts digital collections. The discussions will focus on best practices regarding the themes of each working group in the ECLAP. These themes are, respectively, digital library tools, education and research facilities, and copyright and IPR issues.
 

The workshops are devoted to creating space for dialogue and exploration; to discuss in depth these most urgent themes concerning the ECLAP. Each session is constituted of one internationally renowned guest speaker reflecting on the central session topic and best practice case studies.
 

The afternoon of day 2 will focus on the projected ECLAP roadmap for the next two and a half years, addressing challenges that institutions must face and focusing on the ECLAP framework, content, tools and services as an integrated approach to performing arts digital collections.

The event will include plenty of opportunities for networking, discussion, sharing ideas and best practice implementation.

• Providing experts and scholars of the performing arts with the latest developments in access and European networking opportunities.

• Providing a space for librarians, archivists and repository managers to discuss and share ideas and best practices regarding the creation and management of online performing arts collections.

• Informing decision and policy makers in the performing arts, Chief Information Officers and Curation IT staff of salient issues and challenges concerning the performing arts digital content and ECLAP.

Registration

Participation in the workshops is free of charge but space is limited.
Morning and afternoon coffee breaks and lunch will be provided.
